Trauma has a deep and searing impact on an individual's sense of self, of personal agency and one's place in the world. This workshop will explore the role of storytelling to empower and engage the cognitive, emotional and interpersonal dimensions in the process of rebuilding in its wake. Storytelling is an art form that for all of human history has forged profound and essential human bonds, and using it in a therapeutic context is a creative way to organize one's thinking about confusing or chaotic experiences and mine them for meaning, find and share perspectives on painful truths, bear witness to suffering and deliver a unique contribution to the larger world.

Research shows that learning the art and skill of telling stories about true experiences is linked to 5 key elements of post-traumatic growth:

  • Appreciation of life.
  • Relationships with others.
  • New possibilities in life.
  • Personal strength.
  • Spiritual change.

In this workshop we will examine the purpose and process of therapeutic storytelling - including theory and specific tools - with opportunities for participants to experience storytelling techniques in real time and discuss applications to practice.
