Storytelling is not only the fastest growing form of entertainment in the country, it is also the business and professional skill in greatest demand. To persuade and have influence on the people we serve in a world teeming with content and distractions, we need to know how to engage peoples’ attention, and be memorable as well as informative. Studies show that well-crafted stories can frame and explain important concepts and deliver ideas in ways that have significantly greater impact on attitude and behavior change than sharing information through lecture or power point. There is a wealth of research into the social-emotional mechanisms that make storytelling so powerful, demonstrating that story is the only way to activate parts in the brain so that a listener turns the story into their own idea and experience. Effective stories have a combination of emotional authenticity, sensory details that engage attention, and a clear narrative arc. Stories that "land" on a listener and have genuine impact can motivate and inspire without any prompting by the storyteller.
The ability to craft effective stories and engage people in an authentic way is a fantastic confidence builder and can maximize our impact when presenting information to any group. Anyone can learn the structure and strengthen their skills for delivering stories effectively through practice. This class will provide proven strategies for engaging the imagination of listeners and developing ideas in stories to make them more meaningful.
Over the course of 3 classes participants will develop a true experience into a compelling 5-6 minute story. We will learn techniques for mining one's life for stories that can be used to communicate ideas and be a frame for sharing information. We will learn story structure and discuss how and why it is linked to crafting stories that educate, motivate and illuminate a listener. Participants will work on delivering stories with confidence and discuss the research that demonstrates why story is the most powerful way to share information and have deep, lasting impact on clients, colleagues and communities.
